Nowadays older people in particular are victims of everyday crime.
The SCP has produced a leaflet on "Safety for the elderly" to inform senior citizens about daily risks and highlight preventive measures:
- Risk awareness. Assess the risk according to the situation. Don't create opportunities.
- Avoid crowds. Beware of crowds and large gatherings of people. Pickpockets thrive here.
- Keep doors locked. Never open the door to strangers. Fit a safety latch or door chain to the door.
- Lock your car. Never leave the car unlocked, even on short journeys. Do not leave valuables in view.
- Do not sign contracts immediately. Never sign a contract without first having it checked by a professional.
- Exercise caution when on holiday. Never leave handbags, ID, travel documents or cash unattended.
