Internet auctions and escrow services

Escrow providers act as middlemen and payment administrators for internet transactions where there is no physical contact between the buyer and the seller.
The buyer’s payment is kept until the goods have reached the buyer in impeccable condition. In the case of discrepancies, escrow operators can also act as mediators. Unfortunately, in addition to reputable escrow providers (www.escrow.com) there are also bogus ones. In most fraudulent cases, the seller recommends a particular escrow service to the buyer.
Protection against bogus escrow services:
  • Make sure that the escrow provider has an actual address and telephone number and is not using a tape.
  • Send an email to the provider to see if you receive a reply.
  • Do not opt for services whose internet address ends in .org, as these are usually chosen by non-profit organisations.
  • Steer clear of services which suggest Western Union or other similar providers as the bank account for transfers.
  • Check the licence number. If it is the same as at Escrow.com, it is usually bogus.
